LOUIE LONGEE: THE UNFORGETTABLE TRAILBLAZER

Before the modern era of high-flying basketball, shoe deals, and instantly viral highlights, there was Louie Longee—a flat-out basketball wizard who electrified Montana and put the Poplar Indians on the map forever.

A proud member of the Fort Peck Assiniboine-Sioux tribes, Longee didn’t just play the game; he dominated an entire era, cementing himself as one of the most legendary pioneering athletes the Big Sky Country has ever seen.

In the early 1930s, if you wanted to see the most exciting brand of basketball in the state, you went to Poplar. With fierce leadership, court vision, and unstoppable grit, Longee spearheaded a powerhouse squad that completely tore through the competition. The result? Back-to-back Class C State Championship titles in 1933 and 1934. It wasn’t just a win streak; it was a historic statement that proved reservation basketball was an absolute force to be reckoned with.

For decades, Longee’s exploits lived on in local lore and newspaper archives, waiting for the rest of the world to catch up to his greatness. That moment finally came in December 2007. At 90 years young, Longee was chosen by his tribal community for the ultimate honor: one of the seven historic, inaugural inductees into the Montana Indian Athletic Hall of Fame.

Stunned by the sudden wave of recognition more than 70 years after his final buzzer, the humble champion delivered a line that broke hearts and captured the true depth of the honor:

“I thought people forgot about me.”

Far From Forgotten

Not a chance. Louie Longee’s legacy is a burning torch passed down to every single Native American athlete who steps onto a Montana hardwood today. He proved that passion, dedication, and teamwork can ignite an entire community and echo across generations.

Louie Longee isn’t just a champion from the history books—he is a timeless symbol of Poplar pride, Fort Peck resilience, and basketball royalty!
